At Anthem, we believe that giving back to the community is a responsibility we all share. It’s in the fabric of our culture. Our associates contribute their time, energy and resources to food banks, blood drives, health and vision screenings and a multitude of volunteer services. Anthem supports associates’ engagement with eligible 501(c)(3) charities through the following programs:
Dollars for Dollars
Year-round, Anthem associates give generously to health-related nonprofit organizations across the country through our Dollars for Dollars program, with a 1:1 match from the Anthem Foundation. In 2020, $6.1 million was raised, including $760,000 collected in two days on Giving Tuesday Now (May) and Giving Tuesday (December).
Associates can also choose to donate to the Anthem Cares Fund and help colleagues who need financial assistance because of qualified disasters or personal hardship, including the pandemic.
Dollars for Doers
The Dollars for Doers program encourages associates to participate in year-round volunteerism—and helps them further commit to their communities by providing the associates with rewards that they can direct to charities of their choice. While 2020 looked different from previous years, Anthem associates rose to the challenge and volunteered a record-breaking 110,000 hours, virtually and in person, generating more than $545,000 in Dollars for Doers rewards, which were distributed to community nonprofits.
Volunteer Time Off
Anthem offers volunteer time off to make it easier for associates to support organizations that are important to them. Because many volunteer opportunities occur during work hours, allowing full-time associates to use the Volunteer Time Off program enables more of them to help. Eligible associates receive up to eight hours of paid time to volunteer at qualified charities of their choice.
By inviting Anthem associates to share their volunteer stories and personal reasons for giving back to their communities, as well as to nominate their colleagues who go “above and beyond,” each quarter the Anthem Foundation selects a grand-prize winner who exemplifies our mission to improve lives and communities. The Volunteer Recognition program winners get to choose eligible charities to which the Anthem Foundation will award special grants.
Anthem Volunteer Days
Each fall, our associates and leaders across the company come together for a season of service. The Anthem Volunteer Days program, made possible through a partnership with Lions Club International, has engaged more than 10,000 volunteers, who have achieved 27,500 hours of service in hundreds of projects benefiting two million individuals across the country since 2015.
As the nation has navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic, Anthem associates have chosen to move forward safely to help those in our most vulnerable communities. Showing up across the country, whether virtually or in person, associates have given their time and energy to projects that have a meaningful, long-term impact on those in need. Through nearly 60 events across the country during the month of September, associates made more than 680,000 meals possible for individuals and families in need.
