Health Equity Programs
With the significant demographic changes in the U.S. population, promoting health equity and addressing health disparities are critical. Certain populations have a more difficult time than others using the healthcare system effectively and efficiently. This can result in lower quality, higher costs, worse health outcomes and gaps in care.
Anthem is invested in the health and well-being of all of the diverse communities in which we live and work. and is committed to addressing health disparities through evidence-based research, robust analytics and program design, innovative strategies and caring solutions. Take Action for Health
Heart disease, emotional well-being and cancer are serious health problems for all Americans, especially African Americans. This community health initiative features a free, publically available interactive web tool developed by Anthem, Inc., City of Hope, the National Urban League, and Pfizer Inc. that helps individuals learn why African Americans are at increased risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and depression and how to protect their health and well-being through screenings.
Creating an LGBT-Friendly Practice
An estimated 1.5 million consumers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) are enrolled in Anthem-affiliated health plans, and ensuring that they have access to quality healthcare is vital. Yet research shows that medical practices are often not aware of or trained in the specific health needs of LGBT patients. In response to these disparities, Anthem developed an award-winning Internet-based learning program that connects healthcare providers and their staffers with practical strategies for more-welcoming practices and culturally responsive care to promote effective relationships with LGBT patients.
Delivering Better Asthma Care
To improve the quality of life for diverse patients with asthma, physicians need to be aware of and understand how to address potential gaps in healthcare. Anthem, Inc., has launched an innovative online educational experience, Moving Toward Equity in Asthma Care. Available at no cost to providers and the consumers of their clinical staffs, the tool features a variety of scenarios that highlight racial and ethnic disparities and their effects on diverse populations’ ability to successfully control their asthma. It also explains ways physicians may unknowingly contribute to poor asthma care.
Anthem developed and launched a resource-rich website for providers serving diverse patient populations. Designed with the busy provider in mind, this website is free and offers quick tools and resources that are accessible from any smartphone, tablet or desktop. Providers will find continuing medical education courses that cover topics relevant to caring for diverse patients, as well as other learning opportunities.
