Health & Well-being
At Anthem we actively promote a healthy lifestyle, and that starts with our own employees. As a healthcare company, we know that helping our employees and their family members improve their health and well-being is a crucial part of who we are.
In addition to Anthem’s comprehensive benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and disability coverage, we offer our employees a range of programs to help them get and stay healthy.
Employee Assistance and Work/Life Programs
Resources are available to help our employees and their families with all aspects of their lives—from finding daycare or elder care to planning their finances to obtaining legal assistance.
Onsite Fitness Centers
We have staffed, onsite fitness centers at many locations and offer quarterly fitness club reimbursements for employees without access to an onsite center.
Anthem offers free onsite health services and wellness screenings at major locations.
Wellness Credit Program
When employees show they’re committed to taking care of their health, they pay less for medical coverage by earning wellness credits. Spouses and domestic partners can earn wellness credits too.
Tobacco-Free Facilities and Resources
All Anthem facilities are tobacco free. Tobacco-cessation support and resources are also provided. These efforts have resulted in a 50 percent quit rate among participants.
Healthy Cafeteria and Vending Selections
Anthem provides healthy options at onsite cafeterias and vending machines to make it easier for employees to select and afford healthy foods.
National Walk at Lunch Day
Anthem locations participate in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s National Walk at Lunch Day. Walks are led by local leaders to demonstrate how easy it is to incorporate physical activity into every day.
To help ensure a healthy, productive workplace, Anthem has partnered with the Center for Active Design (CfAD) and is using the Fitwel certification system to enhance building environments by addressing a broad range of health behaviors and risks. Anthem has committed to certifying a minimum of 3 million square feet of office space in 2018.
The Fitwel certification system was created as a joint initiative of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the General Services Administration, along with experts in public health and design.
In 2017, Anthem was invited to participate on the Fitwel Leadership Advisory Board (LAB). The LAB brings together pioneering companies across the finance, healthcare, real estate, design, and sustainability sectors to advise CfAD on maintaining Fitwel by providing strategic direction for its continued ability to enhance building environments.
Employee Safety Program
The safety of our employees is a priority. To ensure a safe and productive workplace, Anthem has a comprehensive Employee Safety Program, overseen by a cross-functional team from Business Continuity, Corporate Security, Facilities, and Risk Management. It offers eLearning courses in situational awareness, business continuity, ergonomics, and emergency response procedures.
All new employees are required to complete Emergency Response Procedures training. Onsite Anthem Safety Committees and Emergency Response leaders are responsible for implementing the safety program, including scheduling evacuation drills. An Employee Safety Reference Guide contains a step-by-step emergency action plan.
Onsite AED defibrillator machines are available, as is training for employees via CadiAcademy. Employees are also encouraged to learn the lifesaving Hands-Only CPR technique. A grant from the Anthem Foundation to the American Heart Association has trained 6.5 million people how to perform the skill.
