For Anthem it is important to do business with suppliers who represent the diversity of our consumers and the people we serve. By developing strong community partnerships we continue to expand our supplier base and improve the economic health of our communities.

Through our supplier diversity program, we are dedicated to working, whenever possible, with businesses owned by minorities, women, veterans, service-disabled veterans, members of the LGBT community, and people with disabilities. We strive to involve diverse suppliers in every bidding opportunity and are focused on ensuring that the program continues to grow.

Anthem has partnered with and given financial support to national and local organizations that promote diverse supplier development. We’re a committed member of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and participate with the Southern California and Mid-States councils. In addition, Anthem is a member of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, a founding member of the U.S. Business Leadership Network Disability Supplier Diversity Program and a community partner and sponsor of the Indianapolis chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

Anthem is proud to play a significant role in creating and sustaining economic development opportunities for diverse suppliers through these memberships and sponsorships and through our support of scholarships to the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Diverse Supplier Mentoring Program »

We also support diverse suppliers through our mentoring program. This program promotes collaboration among diverse suppliers and Anthem’s business leaders and sourcing and Supplier Diversity teams. These formal mentoring partnerships provide suppliers the opportunity to obtain firsthand knowledge of Anthem’s business and culture. Through these partnerships, suppliers grow, develop and expand their capabilities so they are better positioned to meet Anthem’s business needs. Results have shown that suppliers enrolled in our mentoring program have earned additional business from Anthem and have increased their capacity.

Supplier Pay »

Anthem, Inc. values its partnerships with diverse businesses and recognizes the crucial role they play in support of our supply chain. We also understand the financial challenges they face as a result of the demands upon their business operations. In response to President Obama’s accelerated-pay initiative for small businesses, Anthem incorporated the SupplierPay program to help certified, diverse-owned small businesses meet these challenges. Under SupplierPay, diverse suppliers with less than $1 million in spending with Anthem will receive payment for goods and services provided to Anthem at a faster rate. Anthem’s goal for expedited payment to suppliers is for payment to be made within 15 days (or net 15) from the time Anthem receives the invoice.

Anthem carefully tracks its spending with businesses owned by diverse suppliers. We require vendors and contractors to subcontract a percentage of their contracts to such suppliers. Supplier Diversity also works closely with our sourcing teams when launching RFPs.

Year-over-year, Anthem has exceeded its goals for such spending. Anthem has consistently ranked annually on the DiversityInc list of Top Companies for Supplier Diversity nationally and among all industries. Our Supplier Diversity program is clearly aligned with our corporate objectives, enhances our brand and is an integral part of our business approach and planning throughout the enterprise.
